Wie jedes Jahr war der Höhepunkt unserer Reise der Besuch bei Don Alejandro Robaina auf seiner Vega Robaina.

Es war gut, persönlich zu sehen wie es Don Alejandro geht, nachdem es so viele Spekulationen, selbst von „seriösen” Händlern und/oder Blogs zu seinem Gesundheitszustand gab.

Er hat eine Nierenentzündung die am abklingen ist, ihn jedoch sehr schwächt – für ein Mann der am 20 diesen Monats 90 Jahre alt wird wohl normal.

Gegen diese Nierenentzündung braucht man alles mögliche an Medizin, aber bestimmt kein Sauerstoff wie kolportiert wurde, diesen hat er zur Genüge auf der Farm.

Es geht ihm gut, siehe folgende Fotos.

Er wartete bereits auf uns obwohl es sehr früh war und freute sich sichtlich uns zu sehen und mit uns über seine Besuche in der Schweiz zu reden – er fragte mich sogar nach der Kubanischen Botschafterin die ihn während seines letzten Besuches betreute – ich sollte sie an dem Abend treffen und seine Grüße ausrichten.

Wir überbrachten ihn die Grüsse von Lic. Daniel Solana, ebenfalls ein Piñareño und ehemaliger Landwirtschaftsminister sowie Direktor von Cubatabaco, worüber er sich sehr freute, sie kennen sich seit 1963. Sr. Solana hätte uns liebend gern begleitet wenn er nicht an dem Tag verhindert gewesen wäre.

Don Alejandro verbrachte an die 3 h mit uns, zu jeder Zeit sehr präsent, mit grossem Erinnerungsvermögen und sichtlich guter Laune. Er ass mit Appetit, trank Añejo, rauchte eine Zigarre die er in zwei teilte ( der Arzt hat ihm nur eine tägliche Zigarre erlaubt ) um danach erneut eine Zigarre mit uns zu rauchen.

Es war wie immer das Beste Essen auf Kuba !

Der Rundgang durch die Felder war interessant – aber interessanter war es auf der Veranda zu sitzen, Añejo zu trinken und eine hervorragende Padrino zu rauchen.

Wir verabschiedeten uns in der Gewissheit, ihn nächstes Jahr erneut zu besuchen.

As each and every year, the highlight of our Cuba trip was the visit to Don Alejandro Robaina at his Vega Robaina.

It felt good to personally check on his state of health after hearing (and reading ) so much bull speculation , even coming from self-proclaimed “serious” merchants and/or bloggers.

He suffers from a kidney infection that is improving slowly but weakens him considerably, nothing out of the ordinary for a man celebrating his 90-th birthday this month.

To cure this kidney infection you need all sorts of medicine but no oxygen as has been rumoured, he has plenty of that on his farm.

He is doing fine, see the following pictures.

He was already waiting for us although it was quite early and he reminisced about his visits to Switzerland – he even asked about the Cuban Ambassador that he met while visiting Mr Portmann – I was to meet the Lady later that day and pass his regards.

We brought him regards from Lic. Daniel Solana, a fellow Piñareño and former Minister for Agriculture and ex-Director of Cubatabaco, which he enjoyed, as the have known each other since 1963. Mr Solana would have loved to join us on the trip to Robaina but had a previous appointment that prevented it.

Don Alejandro spent 3 hrs with us and was at all times visibly in good shape and humour. He ate with good appetite, drank Añejo and smoked a cigar that he cut in two ( on doctors orders he is allowed only one cigar ) before smoking a second one with us.

Again, it was our best and tastiest food ever in Cuba.

The tour of the fields was interesting but I chose a seat on the veranda to enjoy an excellent Padrino with a few Añejos.

We bid farewell certain to visit and meet him again next year.
