Diesen Dezember verbrachte ich wieder mal eine Woche in Chinas Süden, am Perlenfluss in Kanton.

Auf der idyllischen Shamian Insel rauchte ich Abends neben unserem White Swan Hotel im Rose Beer Garden die Ankunftszigarre und schaute auf den gewaltigen Fluss, die Lichter und die Ausflugsschiffe, die allerdings jetzt im Winter weniger waren.

Es war auch sehr kühl, ich hatte noch mit 20 Grad gerechnet, aber trotz Sonnenschein waren es nur 16 Grad bei unserer Landung gegen 16 Uhr.

So war es auch deutlich frisch am Fluss, und wir waren froh, dass es im Verlauf der weiteren Tage etwas milder wurde.

Diesmal hatte ich mir vorgenommen einige Zigarren Lounges in Kanton zu finden.

Ein befreundeter Kollege der von meinem Hobby weiss, legte mir eine Ausgabe von „That’s Guangzhou“

einem Monatsmagazin, in mein Postfach.

Dort wurden Drei Zigarren Lounges genannt.

Eine sollte sich ganz in der Nähe des Ledermarktes Ziyhang Gang befinden, den ich immer besuche.

Zusammen mit meinem Kapitän und dem Ersten Offizier fuhren wir also in das China Hotel Marriott Liu Hua Lu.

Dort begrüsste uns eine Weihnachtsszenerie die unter anderem von unserer Firma, Lufthansa gesponsort worden war.

Überhaupt, obwohl erst Anfang Dezember und China, man konnte dem Ganzen X-mas Gedöns nicht entfliehen. Überall die Jingl Bells und aus jedem Lautsprechen wünschte man singend „ I wish you a …………“.

Selbst in den Biergärten liefen Kellnerinnen in Weihnachtskostüm herum wie Falschgeld.

Dabei ist Chinesisches Neujahr am 29 Januar 2006 …………

Aber Kommerz ist gut, bringt Geld und Handel – und Christmas ist merry and green – the Colour of Money.

Im Ersten Stock des China Hotels – offiziell Second Floor, es gibt kein Erdgeschoss in China, fanden wir eine sehr gemütliche Cigar & Champagne Lounge mit einem grossen Walk In Humidor und einer attraktiven Sitzecke. Dazu noch private Lockers für ausgesuchte Mitglieder.

Nebenan eine sehr schöne, lange Bar und daneben der Coffee Shop des Hotels.

Alles modern und durchaus gemütlich trotz der schieren Grösse des Hotels.

Passend zum künstlichen Schnee, gab es arktische Temperaturen.

Die Air Condition liess uns erfrieren. Sie war auf Hochtouren gestellt und der Zug war extrem unangenehm.

Einen Capuccino und eine RG Panetela Extra mit Aussicht auf das Kantoner Messegelände.

Ein gemütlicher Ort mit einer „ernsten“ Lounge, durchaus eine Oase nach dem ganzen Shopping.

Übrigens fahren vom Hotel aus auch Busse nach Hong Kong, Shenzen und Macao.

Alles in ca. 1-2 Stunden Fahrt erreichbar.

Die nächste Lounge auf meiner Agenda, der „Gin Yan Club“, war nicht so einfach zu finden, obwohl sie auf der Shamian Insel liegt wo unser Hotel ist und ich fünf Mal um das Haus lief wo sie sich befindet.

Im Hotel gefragt, man schickte mich in die Zweite Shamian Street, einige hundert Meter entfernt.

Dort einige Leute gefragt, ja, hier muss es sein, aber wo ?? In die örtliche Polizeiwache, gefragt, ja, hier müsste sie sein, fragen sie im Hotel nach.

Nachgefragt ; fragen sie im anderen Hotel nach.

Entnervt gehe ich bei „Blenzs“, einem Coffee Shop rein, und siehe da, man schickt mich Richtung Toiletten und da, hinter der Tür die Treppe hoch.

Gefunden !!

Eine fantastische, schöne, ca. 250 qm grosse Lounge, Restaurant und Bar.

Kontrastvoll modern und mit alten Chinesischen Möbeln eingerichtet, abgetrennte Räume und eine Raucherecke mit grossem Humidorschrank und gutem Angebot.

Es ist ein altes Europäisches Handelshaus mit Wendeltreppe.

Unten befindet sich besagtes Cafe – mit Gratis Internet Zugang -, und noch ein First Class Weinladen mit dazugehöriger Wein Bar.

Abends, ab 18 Uhr, ist der „Gin Yan Club“ beleuchtet und besser sichtbar.

Man tritt durch den Haupteingang ein, besagten Weinladen/Bar unten lassend geht man die Wendeltreppe hoch, und schaut hinunter auf das Cafe.

Am Samstag Abend nahm ich mir vor die Lounge nach einem Abendessen zu besuchen.

Im „Second Avenue Restaurant“, einem netten Westlichen Restaurant um die Ecke, hatte ich Steaks auf der Karte gesehen.

Ich brauchte was handfestes.

Sehr schönes Ambiente, gute Vospeise – Gambas al Ajillo -, danach Broccoli Suppe, das Fleisch wird am Tisch flambiert aber das Rib Eye Steak ist unterkocht und überteuert.

Dazu sitze ich, obwohl Samstag Abend 20 Uhr 30 alleine im Restaurant.

Sie haben einen kleinen Weinladen, einen Humidor am Eingang, immerhin.

Ich rauche etwas kleines vor dem Essen.

Zum Nachtisch habe ich mir einen Espresso (oder zwei) und einen Brandy (oder zwei) zu einer guten Zigarre im Gin Yan Club vorgenommen.

Der Club gehört mir alleine. Ich bin – und bleibe der einzige Gast.

Meine Cockpit Crew ist nach Hause geflogen, wieder mal bin ich Waisenkind.

Zwar schön zum nachdenken und Notizen machen, aber es ist zuviel der Einsamkeit.

Sie haben keinen Kaffee. Also kein Brandy.

Ich bestelle einen – sehr gut gemachten – Long Island Tea.

Zünde mir eine gut „abgehangene“ Choix Supreme von Urs Portmann an und geniesse die Ruhe & die Atmosphäre. Später kommt noch etwas Jack Daniels dazu und leistet mir Gesellschaft.

Die Weinkarte der Lounge ist grandios, Alle exklusiven Grand Crus sind da. Lafite, Margaux für 400 Euro, selbst Petrus für 1.300 Euro. Auch „kleinere“ Gewächse.

China wächst, macht sich und Status ist wichtig.

Das Zigarren Angebot ist ebenfalls nicht schlecht aber teuer.

Cohiba, RyJ, Ashton VSG, Montes um die 20 bis 30 Euro.

Ich laufe danach die paar hundert meter zum Rose Beer Garden am Fluss, meinem Lieblingsplatz und rauche noch eine Zigarre zu einem kalten Bier.

Gegenüber, neben dem 7-Eleven Laden wiederum gegenüber dem White Swan, ist ein kleiner Laden der eine anständige Zigarrenauswahl hat. Der Interessierte und flinke Besitzer zeigt mir stolz die „Bückware / Schätze“ als er meine Zigarre sieht. Cohiba Siglo VI zwar bei 40 Euro, aber immerhin, gute Auswahl.

Und man ist als Zigarrenraucher gut angesehen in China. Rauchen ist generell überall erlaubt. Nett gefragt und ich rauche eine gute Panetela beim Friseur zu einem Tsingtao Bier …… no problem.

Die dritte Lounge auf der Liste, Kevin’s Cafe, beim Garden Hotel finde ich nicht. Zwar werde ich wieder die Strasse rauf’ und ‚runter geschickt, aber es lässt sich nicht finden und ich gebe es auf.

Dafür entdecke ich das Schild : Cohibas/Montecristos/Romeo & Julietas 3-rd Floor.

Also rein in das Yian Plaza Center und die Rolltreppe hoch. Ultramodernes Shopping / Restaurant Center.

Wieder finde ich nichts ………

Aber um die Ecke, versteckt, ein kleiner Eckladen – fast Bauchladen – aus dem ein junges Mädchen schaut.

Freundlich, interessiert und kein Wort Englisch verstehend drückt sie mir ihre Drei Seiten-Preisliste in die Hand.

Fräulein Gao Yan Mei gibt mir zu verstehen dass die Zigarren auch nach Hause geliefert werden – like Pizza, Home Delivery Service. Nett. Xie Xie – Danke.

In Tupperware liegt eine gute und gepflegte Auswahl zu annehmbaren Preisen.

Es macht einen sehr guten Eindruck und ich bin beindruckt von diesem versteckten Laden für Aficionados. Good Luck !

Und wieder zurück nach Hause, fast 14 Std. Flugzeit.

Andreas erzählt mir vom Andrang beim Apotheken Notdienst Smoke am 08 Dez. den ich verpasst habe. Beim nächsten ANS am 21 werde ich glücklicherweise da sein.

Dann geht es vom 23 bis 27 nach Seoul, dort werde ich einige gute Zigarren für Weihnachten mitnehmen, das Gala Menue des Grand Hiltons am Weihnachtstag sieht sehr gut aus – kein „delicious dog meat“ drauf – und vielleicht raucht noch jemand in der Crew.

In Itaewon werde ich wieder Mr Park, „Your-Name-on-a-Hat“ aufsuchen und hoffe dass er geöffnet hat, denn wir fliegen wieder nach Kuba und brauchen neue Kappen für das VIII Festival del Habano.

Again it was back to Asia in December for a week in southern China, by the Pearl River in Canton.

On the idyllic Shamian Island I smoked my welcome cigar at the Rose Beergarden next to our Crew Hotel, the White Swan looking down at the mighty River, the Lights and the brilliantly lighted excursion boats.

I had planned for mild & warm weather and was surprised to almost freeze. It was already 16 degrees Celsius when we landed at 4 p.m.

So it was cool to say the least by the river, and we were happy that it got milder the following days.

This time around I wanted to find some Cigar Lounges in Canton.

Three Cigar Lounges were recommended.

One was located very close to the Ziyhang Gang Leather Market that I always visit.

Along with my Captain and First Officer we dropped by the China Hotel Marriott, Liu Hua Lu, http://marriott.com/property/propertypage.mi?marshaCode=CANMC

We were greeted by a snowy Christmas Scene in the Lobby which was sponsored – among others – by my Company, Lufthansa.

Even though it is early December and China (not known to celebrate X-mas), you cannot escape the whole X-mas craze.
Jingle Bells everywhere and speakers blurring out “We wish you a merry X-mas…”
Even the waiters would run around in red X-mas dresses – ignorant of what it meant.

I guess the craze is good for business, it brings money, and Christmas is merry and green – the colour of money.

The next REAL holiday is the Chinese New Year on Jan. 29th. 2006…

In the China Hotel Marriott on the first floor (officially the second floor since there’s no ground floor in China), we found a very comfy Cigar and Champagne Lounge with a large Walk-In Humidor and an attractive sofa corner. Also available were private lockers for selected members.
Next to it, a pretty, long Bar adjoining the Coffee Shop.

All modern and comfy despite the large dimensions of the Hotel.

Along with the artificial snow, we felt arctic temperatures, the A/C nearly froze us.
It was running full steam and the draft was awful.

I had a capuccino and a RG Panetela Extra overlooking the Canton Fairgrounds.

A nice place with a “serious” Lounge look, a nice Oasis after all the shopping.

Buses leave from the Hotel to Hong Kong, Shenzen and Macao, all within and hour or two away.

The next Lounge on my Agenda was the “Gin Yan Club”. Even though it is located on Shamian Island where we were staying, I had a difficult time locating it even though I passed the building five times and could not see it.

I asked a person at the hotel and was instructed to go to Second Shamian Street, a few hundred meters away.

When I arrived there I still could not find it. Everyone that I asked was sure that it had to be there, but couldn’t tell me where ?? I went to the Police Precint and was told, “yeah, should be here if not ask at this Hotel.” Well I didn’t find it there either and when I asked at the other hotel I was told to “ask at this OTHER hotel!!!”.

Discouraged I walk into “Blenzs”, a Starbucks copy, and they sent me to the washrooms where behind a door there was a stairway going up.

A fantastic and beautiful big (around 250 sq. meters) lounge, restaurant and bar.
Stark contrast between modern chairs and old chinese furniture, separate rooms and a Smokers Corner with a large Humidor Cabinet and a good selection.

It’s an old European colonial Trading house.

Downstairs you find the Café – with free Internet access – as well as a First Class Wine Store with an elegant Wine Bar.

You enter the Gin Yan Club through the main Door after 6 p.m. and walk through the Wine Store to walk up the Stairway overlooking the Café. That door earlier was marked as the “emergency” exit.

So, on Saturday evening, I had Dinner at the “Second Avenue Restaurant” around the corner which is a fine western place. I needed some hearty fare.

Very nice European feeling, with good starters – Shrimps in garlic -, then a Broccoli soup, the meat was cooked – flambe – by the table, but the Rib Eye Steak was undercooked and overpriced.
Event though it was a Saturday night at 8:30 pm, I was alone in the place.
Still nice as they had a Humidor by the door.
I smoked a small cigar while I waited for my dinner.

For Dessert I had planned an Espresso ( or two ) along with a Brandy ( or two ) at the Gin Yan Club.

The Club was all mine. I was – and remained the only guest.

My Cockpit Crew had flown home by this time and I felt like a motherless child. I was an orphan.

It was nice to be able to follow your thoughts or take notes, but it was too much loneliness.

I was disappointed to find out that they do not serve coffee, so no Brandy either for me.

I ordered a – very – well mixed Long Island Tea instead.

I light up a well “cured” Choix Supreme from Urs Portmann’s Shop and enjoy the Peace and Atmosphere of the place. Later, I let Jack Daniels provide some company for a second round.

The Lounge’s Wine List is impressive, all exclusive Grand Crus are on it.
Lafitte, Margaux for 400 Euros, even Petrus for 1.300 Euros. But also smaller brands.
China’s growth and furious development have made Status very important.

Their Cigar Selection was also not bad, but expensive. Cohiba, RyJ, Ashton VSG, and Montes could be had for around 20 to 30 Euros.

I walk down to the river and sat at the Rose Beer Garden, my favourite spot, enjoying a cigar and a cold beer.

There is a small stall across the street from the White Swan, next to the 7-Eleven store that has a decent cigar selection. The quickwitted owner proudly shows me his “treasures” when he notices that I smoke a cigar myself. Forty Euros for a Siglo VI, but still, decent selection.

And you are well respected as a Cigar Smoker in China. Smoking is generally permitted. I asked nicely and was able to smoke a good Panetela to a Tsingato Beer while having a Haircut …………. no problem.

Third on my List was “Kevin’s Café”, near the Garden Hotel. I was able to find the Hotel but not the place.

Again I am sent up & down the Street a few times and cannot find it so I decided to give up looking until I found a sign saying : Cohiba/Montecristo/Romeo y Julieta 3rd Floor.

I walk into the ultra modern Yian Plaza Shopping & Restaurant Center and take the escalator up.

Again I don’t find anything.

But hidden around a corner there is a tiny stall and a young girl looks out.
She is very interested and friendly and she speaks not a word of english while she presses her 3-page cigar list in my hands.
Miss Gao Yan Mei makes me understand that she also “home delivers” – like Pizza Home Service. Nice.

There was a very good and well kept Selection of cigars in Tupperware containers which had acceptable prices. My impression was good, and I was amazed at this tiny, hidden Shop for Aficionados. Good Luck !

I took some pictures of an image of Chairman Mao smoking a cigar on the wall, a friendly “ Thank You for Smoking” request to the masses.

And then it’s back home and a long 14 hr. flight.

Andreas tells me that the last “Pharmacy Smoke” on De. 8 gathered lots of smokers, I missed it. But luck has it that I will attend the one on De.21-st in the Pharmacy.

Then I’ll be off to Seoul, I’ll take some good cigars for Christmas, the Gala Menu at the Grand Hilton there looks good – no “delicious dog meat” on it – and maybe there will be a fellow smoker in my crew.

I will see Mr Park “ Your-Name-On-A-Hat” and hope his Shop’s open, as we will fly to Cuba again and need some Caps embossed with “VIII Festival del Habano”.
