A Day With Wörrstadt Folks In Havana
10 Aug
It was a nice change of pace to meet up with friends from my small German village in Havana and show them around.
Klaus, Anne and Mona were in Varadero on vacation for 2 weeks and wanted to see Havana, smoke a cigar, see the cigar lounges and sights and take a ride on the Malecon in an oldtimer cabrio.
We met up early morning and I took them on a stroll through the touristy parts of old Havana, Plaza de la Catedral, Plaza de Armas, calle Mercaderes , Plaza Vieja.
We stopped by Hostal Conde de Villanueva for a cafecito and a Mareva with Reynaldo – Anne promised him a FSV Mainz 05 scarf for his decorated wall, only condition : just make sure it doesn’t hang next to Bayern München 🙂
Next stop was a Mojata at Hotel Raquel and a good cigar which, along with the drink and the heat made Klaus a bit dizzy….
I had been told that Hotel Nacional now charges 5 CUC entrance fee for tourists claiming it’s a “museum”. It is true, although we were lucky not being charged – I would not pay to smoke a cigar in their terrace.
Jose had arranged for a 50’s cabrio and a 15 minute ride on the Malecon.
it was hot as hell and I was happy to be back inside Jose’s a/c car. No need to pay for skin cancer.
A long lunch at Amigos del Mar followed before showing them around Miaramar, buying some rum and cigars and finally enjoying the breeze and some rum at my Casa’s terrace overlooking the Almendares river.
As their Varadero taxi, a fairly new Skoda Fabia, decided to go kaputt for their return ride, it was a long wait in the breeze before they finally returned to Varadero in a different carriage.
It’s Cuba 🙂
