Valencia – Eine originelle Stadt

Nach meiner Rückkehr aus Havanna flog ich 9 Tage nach Spanien um meine Eltern zu besuchen und am Mittelmeer die Lungen etwas „durchzulüften”.

Letzteres gelang mir zwar morgens beim Lauf am Mittelmeer, Abends allerdings gab es grössere Zigarren, wie die Monte „A” oder die Sancho Panza „Sanchos” die es im Angebot gab – die Vitola soll auslaufen – und von denen ich für Andreas und für mich welche mit BD 2000 finden konnte.

Den Hin- und Rückflug hatte ich über Valencia gebucht, eine Stadt die ich nicht kannte – oft bin ich dort vorbeigefahren oder gelandet aber nie hatte ich sie besucht -, und so entschloss ich mich auf dem Rückweg 2 Tage dort zu verbringen und mir die traditionellen „Fallas” anzuschauen.

Es ist eine interessante, moderne Stadt, in der Grösse gerade richtig mit sehr freundlichen Menschen die mich hilfsbereit und gastfreundlich aufnahmen.

Rafael Bernardo hatte mir noch von der „Mascletà” geschwärmt, diese sollte ich nicht verpassen. Es handelt sich um eine rituelle Pulver- oder Feuerwerksexplosion die sich fast 10 Minuten lang hinzog und jeden Tag während der „Fallas” am Rathausplatz stattfindet. Laut Rafael ein wahrer „tit shaker”.

Er sollte Recht haben.

Wobei die hier verlinkten Videos nicht die Intensität oder die Lautstärke wieder geben die man auf dem Platz spürt. Dies meinte Rafael mit dem „tit shaker” – dass einem die Brust vor Intensität „zitterte”.

Die „Fallas” sind Valencia’s berühmteste Feste und finden im März statt. Begonnen wohl als heidnisches Ritual um den Winter zu vertreiben. Jedes Viertel baut das Jahr über Pappmache Figuren die während der Feste zusammen aufgebaut und von allen bewundert werden um sie dann in der „Nit del Foc”, der Nacht des Feuers, in einer „Cremà” am St. Josefstag, 19 März, zu verbrennen. Alle Figuren bis auf eine, die als Beste von allen verschont wird.

Andere Rituale der „Fallas” sind die „Despertà”, wo morgens um 8h mit Feuerwerkskörper die Nachbarschaft geweckt wird und eben die „Mascletà”.

Um diese zu erleben war ich bereits gegen 12h30 am Rathausplatz, sehr früh, denn sie findet um 14h statt, aber die Stadt war voller Besucher. Dieses Jahr fanden gleichzeitig die „Fallas” und die „Semana Santa”, die Karwoche statt. Dementsprechend der Ansturm. Aber alle waren fröhlich und gut gelaunt, Eltern mit Kindern, ganze „Fallas”-Clubs und viele Touristen.

Nette Einheimische nahmen mich unter ihre Fittiche und ich genoss mit ihnen die Geräuschexplosion bei kaltem Bier, Gambas und einer Zigarre.

Es war wirklich etwas imposantes, hatte Stil und hörte sich gut an.

Punkt 14h ging das Fest los und der Brustkorb vibrierte zu den Schlägen. Der Pulverdampf zog durch den Platz bis am Ende fast nichts mehr zu sehen war, nur den unglaubliche Geräusch wehte über die Stadt. Eine unglaubliche Explosion der Sinne.

Überhaupt ist es eine sehr interessante und sehenswerte Stadt. Die Mischung aus Alt und Neu ist beeindruckend. Eine riesige Altstadt mit engen Gassen die noch erhalten ist und nicht als Touristenfalle dient, sondern bewohnt und benutzt wird, eine sehr moderne Flussbettlandschaft mit architektonisch wertvollen Museen und Konzertsälen und dazu noch das Mittelmeer mit Stränden und dem „America’s Cup” Yachthafen.

Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias – CAC

Mit der Metro und den Stadtbussen liess sich jedes Ziel leicht erreichen und so lief ich die Stadt ab, verlor mich im alten Viertel und begab mich morgens zu der Museumsmeile. Diese sollte man auf keinen Fall verpassen ! Sie befindet sich im trockenem Flussbett der sich durch die Stadt zieht. “Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias” – CAC.

Am ersten Abend fand ich durch Zufall eine Kneipe die mir auf Anhieb gefiel, alt, klein, verraucht, kleine Karte, unter der Theke Plastikboxen für Abfälle. Spezialität waren Muscheln und andere kleine Schweinereien deren Order der Kellner lauthals in die Küche brüllte. Hier sollte ich beide Male zu Abend essen und später erfahren dass es sich um Valencias beste Muschelkneipe handelt.

Wieder sehr freundlich : der Besitzer kannte mich am nächsten Tag wieder und wusste dass ich zur Zigarre einen Torres 10 Años trinke. Und das bei dem Andrang. Kompliment.

Monte “A” – Non-Exploding Version

After the Festival del Habano in Cuba, I flew to the Mediterranean coast to visit my parents and to air my lungs.

Not much chance of airing, really, as I found an offer for SanchoPanza Sanchos, vintage 2000, at an attractive price, these vitola being discontinued in Spain. Additionally, I found a box of Monte “A” – not really suitable for a short smoke.

As I had booked my flight through Valencia, a city that I have often passed by but never visited before, I made a point of spending my last 2 days there and see the renowned “Fallas” festivities for myself.

The “Fallas” festival is quite famous in Spain, a festival where every neighbourhood builds large & beautiful puppets and colourful scenes that are the neighbourhood association’s work of a whole year, only to be cremated during the “Cremà´” the last day of the festivity, called the “Nit del Foc”.
The whole thing is to honour the patron of Valencia, San Jose, March 19-th – and surely a pagan rite to chase winter away and welcome spring.

I called Rafael Bernardo in Madrid, and he recommended I visit a “Falla” tradition that he – and then later I – would consider a “tit shaker”.

It is called a “Mascletà” and it is only performed during the traditional “Fallas”.
The “Mascletà” is sort of a “sound orgasm”, an explosion of sound made by powder charges, very carefully orchestrated and performed by only the best pyrotechnicians in Valencia – who then receive the applause on the city hall’s balcony.

The city hall square is stocked up with enough explosives to blow up a small country – and then all is lit.

Loud explosions leading to a sonic boom crescendo mark a “Mascletà”.

It is performed each day during the “Fallas” at 2 pm on city hall square ( and sometimes also at night ) and masses of people flock and invade the square ( the whole city ! ) to watch & hear it.

What a great show, really amazing, fun and fantastic to clear up your ears. Then I understood what Rafael meant – my chest, my whole body was vibrating from the incredible barrage of powder explosions and the overwhelming noise.

I found Valencia a very charming city, modern and classic, just the right size, very friendly locals, attractive old quarter with very good food – also with very convenient subway and bus services that make a car obsolete.

Do not miss the vanguard “Ciudad de las Artes y la Ciencias” CAC, down by the riverbed that sneaks through the city !

I stumbled by chance into an old, smoky, small and packed Tasca with a few small tables, a small menu and large plastic boxes for waste underneath the front line. The house’s special are mussels and other tasty tapas that the waiter would yell into the neighbouring kitchen, delicious. I would have my dinner here the two evenings, being pleasantly surprised that the owner would greet me like a regular next day and remember that I’d drink a Torres 10 Años brandy with my cigar. Excellent.
