Bei unserem letzten „Smoke & Dine” hatte ich bereits das Buch kurz vorgestellt und angekündigt, dass meine Bestellung unterwegs sei.

Nun hat Albert mir freundlicherweise den langersehnten Bildband aus Salzburg mitgebracht, und ich möchte ihn hier vorstellen und allen Zigarrenrauchern besonders ans Herz legen.

Nur wenige Bücher schaffen den Spagat zwischen dekorativem „Kaffeetisch Buch” und seriösem Sachbuch. Dieses Buch erfüllt beide Kriterien. Ästhetisch perfekt wie sachkundig genau. Allein die Präsentation ist eine Hommage an die Zigarre.

Auch wenn ich es erst nur überflogen habe seitdem ich es gestern erhielt, faszinieren mich seine kurzen, prägnanten Texte die die Seele Havannas einfangen sowie die Zigarrenkunde wobei man dem Author, Peter Meraner, seine Liebe und seine Passion für den Tabak immer wieder anmerkt. Die Texte sind dreisprachig in Deutsch, Spanisch und English geschrieben.

Die Fotos des Bildbandes sind von der jungen Fotografin Ann-Christine Wöhrl zauberhaft aufgenommen und ausschliesslich in Schwarz-Weiss gehalten. Dieses gibt dem Buch eine optische Linie die von Seriosität zeugt und nicht vom Thema ablenkt.

Und das Thema, wie der Titel verspricht, sind die Habanos.

Es beginnt mit dem Alltag in Havanna, dann geht es aber schon nach Vuelta Abajo. Zurück in Havanna wird die Casa del Tabaco in der Calle Mercaderes 120 und die Zigarrenfabriken besucht, es werden Anekdoten erzählt, politische Slogans vorgestellt, die Transportmittel beleuchtet und Fälschungen gezeigt. Selbst ein Kapitel Nützliches für den Zigarrenraucher findet man.

Zwei besonders aussagekräftige Kapitel sind Portraits und Don Alejandro Robaina gewidmet.

Ich freue mich bereits auf einen ruhigen Nachmittag oder einen verregneten Sonntag, um das Buch in Ruhe bei einer guten Zigarre zu lesen.

Es ist eines dieser Bücher die man, wie Min Ron Nee’s Enzyklopädie Post-Revolutionärer Havanna Zigarren, immer wieder gerne in die Hand nimmt um aus Pläsier zu blättern – hier wie dort könnte man schwören den Geruch der Habanos zu schnuppern.

I had already seen this book at our last Smoke & Dine event and noted that my order was on the way.

After just being hand-delivered from Salzburg, Austria, by courtesy of Albert, I’d like to introduce the book and warmly recommend it to every cigar aficionado.

Only a few books overcome the distinction between a pretty “coffe table book” for purely decorative purposes and a seriously oriented book on cigar matters. Aesthetically perfect and perfectly knowledgeable. The presentation itself is an Hommage to cigars.

Even though I have only perused the book since receiving it yesterday, I am fascinated by its short, precise texts which capture the soul of Havana, as well as the cigar content, where the love and passion of author Peter Meraner shines through every page.
The book is tri-lingual with all text written in German, Spanish and English.

The photographs in the book are by young photographer Ann-Christine Wöhrl, magical moments captured in black and white. This gives the book an optical line that is serious and does not distract from the content.

And Habanos is the content, as the title promises.

It starts with everyday life in Havana, then it moves to the Vuelta Abajo region. Back in Havana it visits the Calle Mercaderes 120 and the Casa del Tabaco located there as well as the cigar factories, anecdotes are told, political slogans are shown, the means of transport explained and even fake cigars are portrayed. You will even find a chapter on useful tips for the cigar smoker.

Two specially meaningful chapters are dedicated to Portraits and to Don Alejandro Robaina.

A book that I look forward to fully enjoy on a quiet afternoon or a rainy Sunday along with a good cigar.

It is one of those books that, like Min Ron Nee’s Encyclopaedia of Post-Revolutionary Havana Cigars, always finds its way back into one’s hands and where you always find an interesting remark – you could swear that you smell the aroma of good Habanos in them.
